DR

BENJAMIN TAN YINGBIN

Dr Benjamin Tan graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Upon graduation, he was first posted to the Health Promotion Board’s School Dental Service to provide dental care for children from the various primary and secondary schools. During his time in public service, Dr Tan also provided community dental care with the National University Polyclinics (Jurong).

His next posting to the National Dental Centre of Singapore (NDCS) gave him an opportunity to enhance his clinical skills as he was given advanced training in the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery department, as well as the Endodontics department. This allowed Dr Tan to pursue his passion, while honing his skills and insights in the field of Wisdom Tooth Surgery, Complicated Extractions and Root Canal Treatments.

During his time in NDCS, Dr Tan also did Emergency calls at the Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments in the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Changi General Hospital (CGH) and Sengkang General Hospital (SKH). This gave him exposure to manage dental traumas and emergencies.

Dr Tan is well known for being friendly and meticulous in his work. He strongly believes in patient-centric care and aims to tailor treatment plans that would best benefit his patients.

Dentistry beyond the clinics

In his free time, Dr Benjamin Tan likes to volunteer himself by providing dental treatment for the less-privileged both locally and overseas.

In the local scene, he is currently volunteering at Willing Hearts Dental Clinic to provide dental treatment for domestic workers. By doing so, he hopes that he can show his gratitude for the hard work of these workers, who had left behind so much of their lives to travel here and help us in our households.

Dr Tan also likes to volunteer his dental expertise overseas, and he had been on multiple Dental Mission Trips to remote villages in developing countries such as Cambodia and Laos. His experiences in these overseas dental mission trips have instilled in him the importance of maintaining a high standard for dental care in Singapore. As an avid traveller, Dr Tan is also thankful that his skill-set has allowed him the opportunity to travel to these places, and concurrently give back to society at the international level.

Getting to know our Dentist

Why did you choose to be a dentist?

When I was young, I used to have a phobia of visiting the dentist. After years of avoiding a visit to the dentist in my teens, I started to develop a very bad toothache from tooth decay that requires root canal treatment. This enlightened me on the importance of dental care and dental preventive measures at an early age.

While the irony is palpable that I became a dentist myself, this allows me to empathise and relate with my dental-phobic patients. By being a friendly neighbourhood dentist and sharing my ‘origin story’, I hope that I can inspire my fellow dental-phobic community to overcome their fears and reach out for quality dental care.

What is one advice that you want to give patients?

Like most things in life, prevention is always better than the cure when it comes to dental health. Start by practising good daily oral hygiene, and visiting the dentists routinely for health screening. Remember, no pain does not mean no disease. Often with dental diseases, pain only comes in the later stages. Early access to dental care can help prevent disease progression and the need for more complicated dental treatments.

What are the things that keep you motivated in dentistry?

I enjoy contributing and giving back to society as much as I can! Seeing my patients leave the clinic with a confident smile on their face, fuels me to give my best and provide the highest quality of work for them.
